Guide To Shuffling Tarot Cards

Guide To Shuffling Tarot Cards

When you get a Tarot card deck for the first time or a reader asks you to shuffle a deck, you might wonder how exactly you are supposed to do it. You might tell yourself that you don't want to do it the "wrong way." You might fear that doing so would lead to a "wrong reading." Fret not. Any Tarot reader will tell you that there is no wrong way of shuffling your cards. The idea is to just mix the cards and get a feel for them. That's it. So, whatever you do, it will be totally fine. You don't have to be a professional card dealer, you know!

Why You Need To Shuffle Tarot Cards

There are primarily two reasons why you need to shuffle Tarot cards. First, you need to make sure that they are random enough to do a reading for someone new. You obviously don't want to pick the same cards for everyone, do you? Secondly, shuffling the cards can be a great way to get into a meditative, intuitive, and mindful state. As you shuffle the cards, you can start connecting with them and think about the questions you have. You can also ask a higher power for guidance and assistance during the reading.

How To Shuffle Tarot Cards

Now that you understand why you need to shuffle Tarot cards, it's time to take a look at some common shuffling techniques.

1) Overhand Shuffle

This is probably the most common technique. In it, you hold the deck of cards in one hand and pull out small chunks of cards with the other hand. Then, place these chunks on top of the deck. Repeat this a few times, and you are done!

2) The Drop And Smoosh

This is a favorite of many as it truly assures randomness. In this technique, you need to place your cards face down on the floor. Then, mix them up until you are satisfied. Then, arrange them into a deck once again.

3) Restacking This is similar to the overhand shuffle. However, instead of holding the deck of cards in your hand, you simply place them on a surface in front of you. Then, you take out chunks of cards from anywhere in the deck and place them back anywhere you like. You keep repeating this until you're satisfied that the cards are suitably mixed.

4) The Three Pile Cut

This is another simple technique that doubles as a spread. In it, you first need to shuffle the cards as you like (you can use any technique on this list). Then, divide the deck into three piles, placing each one towards your left. Then, you can pick any pile at random and pull out cards from there. You can also use the three piles as a simple past, present, and future Tarot reading.

5) The Fan

This technique involves placing your Tarot cards face down on a surface and fanning them out. You might have seen card players or even magicians use this technique. After fanning the cards out, you can simply choose the ones you feel drawn to.
